Why Join SFGG
We welcome all players interested in joining SFGG. We carry three full men’s sides, three High School sides (Varsity, JV, Freshmen), competing in multiple divisions, and youth rugby for ages 5-14, so there is room for players of all levels of experience and ability.
The season runs from December through May, with RSL playoffs in June, but new players are welcome to come out at any point in the season. You can always drop into training unannounced – just come out and introduce yourself. Please note, however, USA Rugby registration with our club is required for all players or else we could be subject to disqualification in league games. We can assist you in registering with USA Rugby.
We have the best game and practice facilities in the area, and opened a brand new clubhouse and pitch in the fall of 2005 – we are the only rugby club in California with a fieldside clubhouse. We offer excellent coaching at all levels and only ask for your commitment to be the best you can be.
Our top players compete in the USA Rugby Super League, vying for the National Championship, and receive exposure to the National Team selectors. Those players not involved in Super League compete in the Northern California RFU, one of the strongest local leagues in the United States, with the opportunity to make National Club playoffs.
We really are looking for people who want to seriously develop themselves as players and to contribute to a well established club, both on and off the pitch. Anyone who pays their dues and attends training twice a week will get a chance to play on Saturdays.
In addition to our three men’s teams, we also have an U19 side for high school age players. This is a strong program that has produced numerous players for collegiate programs around the country and our senior mens’ sides. We now carry three full youth squads, Varsity, JV and Freshmen. We welcome youth players from across the city, regardless of which high school they attend. Past players have come from private schools such as Sacred Heart, Riordan and SI and public schools like Washington and Lincoln. Feel free to contact us for more information!
Foreign based players should please note the following:
Rugby in America is an entirely amateur sport. We do not pay players, nor do we cover their travel costs from abroad. However, we welcome everyone to the club. If you are in the area and would like to play for us, please come out to training. If you commit to the club, we will do what we can to help you find employment and housing.
