The Pacific Rugby Premiership has announced a return to play for the 2018 season with Samurai Sportswear as the title sponsor. It will the fourth season for America’s highest level amateur competition. The PRP played complete seasons from 2014-16 with a brief hiatus for 2017.
Returning to the competition are five original clubs--San Francisco Golden Gate (SFGG), Olympic Club, Santa Monica RFC, Belmont Shore, and Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC). Joining this year is the Life West Gladiators. The Bay Area side has been on an impressive streak in DI and in the Cal Cup. Also playing in the Cal Cup’s lone season last year were SFGG, Olympic Club, Belmont Shore, and OMBAC, who beat Life West in the final.
Play begins on February 10th and ends on April 28th. A finals weekend is set for May 5th in Southern California. Each team will play the other five teams twice, once at home and once on the road. The full schedule can be seen HERE.
In addition to the finals weekend on May 5th the winner of the competition will advance to play the Red River Champion in the U.S.A. Rugby DI playoffs. The move was made in order to eliminate two games in two days, a practice that has been detrimental to player welfare, and to provide a higher level of competition.
Geno Mazza, PRP Operations Director, states 'we are excited for the return of the PRP this season. For the clubs, the players and the fans. These are clubs with real history and real rivalries, playing elite level rugby, week in and week out. We are also thrilled to partner with Samurai Sportswear as the PRP Title Sponsor for the 2018 season. They will add great value and we will work closely with them to help build the competition and PRP brand'.
